Retainer v. Flat Fee
Attorneys typically charge fees for services through either a retainer-based agreement or a flat fee agreement. Typically, the more complex the case the more likely the retainer-based agreement will be used. A retainer agreement requires that you deposit money with the lawyer and he or she then draws money from the deposit based upon the amount of hours spent on your legal matter. In other cases that are more straight-forward, such as uncontested matters, the flat fee is generally the norm. A flat fee typically requires a one-time payment for a specific service.Hiring a lawyer is not an easy decision for many reasons…and one major reason is cost. Lawyers aren’t cheap…yet you do not want to hire a lawyer because he or she costs less than others. And lawyers aren’t like cars…the “best” ones don’t always cost more.
The retainer v. flat fee decision is absolutely meaningless if the legal representation is worthless. The key to hiring any law firm is finding value…value is that balance of effective and knowledgeable legal representation at a price for service that is reasonable and fair. The Burnham Law Firm prides itself on providing value for its clients.
Each case is specific and this firm handles fee agreements on a case-by-case basis depending on the complexity and circumstances surrounding each individual client. Do your research. Ask questions. Compare costs. Interview many different lawyers. In the end…go with the firm that provides value. We are confident that, if you do this, you will decide that The Burnham Law Firm is as advertised
